Michael Shannon reprises his role as Superman’s villain General Zod in the DCEU’s newly released Swan Song, the flash. He previously admitted he was confused by Zod’s return to the big screen as Superman killed the shit out of him In Steel man. Now he says, very clearly, that big blockbusters are “dumb entertainment” that doesn’t interest him. What a coincidence !
In a new interview with Empireactor has nothing but harsh words for blockbuster movie franchises, calling them ‘mindless entertainment’, revealing he turned down a role in a star wars film for this reason: “I never want to be stuck in a franchise. I don’t find them interesting and I don’t want to perpetuate them. If I do something, I want there to be some kind of purpose, I don’t want to do mindless entertainment. The world doesn’t need more senseless entertainment. We are inundated with it.
Of course Shannon is currently playing in the received lukewarm Flash movie, which is really a franchise movie. Here is his explanation: “That’s actually one of the reasons why I made Steel man in the first place, it was a one-and-done. So I was quite shocked to hear about this reprisal of the role. But I like the story the flash is telling and I hadn’t been there long – I was only there a few weeks – so it didn’t break my back to do it.
It might have been more convincing if Shannon hadn’t said Collider a few weeks ago that “multiverse movies are like someone playing with action figures” and that working on the flash “wasn’t quite satisfying for me, as an actor.” But even Zod has to eat, I guess.
